Mindfulness is one of those concepts that people talk about like it's going to change your life, and it's annoying, because like, it can change your life! But not quickly or easily.
I am not a person who does meditation, for the most part. I've tried lots of meditating, and if it's longer than 5 minutes I fall asleep. My default state if I'm motionless with my eyes closed for more than 5 minutes is to fall asleep. I still find ways to practice mindfulness, and benefit from it.
It helps when I think of mindfulness as a skill I'm practicing, not as a tool to make me feel better. If I feel bad, mindfulness doesn't make me feel less bad, but it does move my attention away from feeling bad, and then lets me notice other things exist outside of me feeling bad, and then when I'm done, I feel better about myself because I just practiced a skill even though I felt bad, and doing stuff when it's hard is worthy of celebration.
